a letter to my baby on the anniversary of your due date

Dear Bodhi,

What a year we have had my beautiful boy! You turn one in just a few days. At this time last year, I was still only imagining what you might be like and eagerly awaiting your arrival. Today is the anniversary of our due date. We expected you today and you made us wait. It was worth it. You have changed our lives in ways we never imagined. Continue reading

baby-proof cake stand for Bodhi’s 1st birthday

{photo credit --- A Fabulouse Fete on etsy}

After searching high and low for the perfect option, I finally settled on this wooden cake stand for Bodhi’s first birthday party. He will enjoy his first sugar experience right off of this beauty.

I think this is such a great option for little ones. It’ made of wood so it will not break like all of the adorable glass cake stands out there! And I know it will get a lot of use in the future too. We plan to have Bodhi eat his “smash cake” on the floor with everyone else sitting on the floor around him instead of confined to his high chair. This mama knows she is in for a mess, but I think it’ll be worth the experience. Check out A Fabulous Fete on Etsy for other cake stand options.

two years of fancy & 30 before 30

This weeks marks the second blogiversary for live the fancy life! Thank you to all of you who have read, commented and shared this blog with others. I’m looking forward to my third year with this blog! I’ll be adding even more simple and inexpensive party tips and ideas, sales alerts, home design inspiration, freebies from across the web and of course, ideas for mamas and babies!

While it’s the blog’s 3rd year, this year marks my 30th! Yes, I’m the freak holding the camera and smiling uncomfortably in the photo below, but doesn’t the pic scream “PARTY!”?

{just a few of my favorite ladies at my bachelorette party}

Inspired by one of my favorite bloggers, Nicole of Making it Lovely, I have decided to share my list of 30 before 30 as it stands today (which is 28 before 30). I will turn the big 3-0 March 25, 2012. Some of these are more challenging and more interesting than others, but all of them are important to me.

Perhaps you can all hold me accountable? I have some time, but I have a very active 6-month-old baby (see below), so time is a little limited. By the way, happy six month birthday Bodhi (someday you may read this for tips on how to impress the ladies)! You have changed my world in ways I never thought possible and I love you to pieces!

Since I’ve been working on this list for a while, I’ve already started crossing some things off. Here goes!

  1. Write three paid articles for magazines—done with two, one to go
  2. Take a photography class—done
  3. Learn to use my camera on the manual setting
  4. Take monthly photos of Bodhi for one full year
  5. Make photo book of our wedding finally
  6. Make photo book of Bodhi’s first year
  7. Run a 5K (I’ve done this before, but post-baby is another story)
  8. Declutter our office
  9. Take the Making Things Happen challenge
  10. Take a vacation alone with my hubby—scheduled for our anniversary!
  11. Join a mom’s group that meets in person
  12. Host a moms-only event
  13. Start a Facebook page for moms I know
  14. Lose the rest of my pregnancy weight
  15. Go to Baby/Mama yoga (at least once)
  16. Interview someone who inspires me and feature them here
  17. Throw myself a lovely 30th birthday shindig
  18. Take Doula training
  19. Start a parenting blog or add a parenting section to this blog with contributing writers—done for a while now—see monday {momday}
  20. Throw a fancy cocktail party (I do this many times a year, but it’s a lot harder now, so wanted to set a goal)
  21. Stop drinking soda (practically complete)
  22. Get a yellow front door—this will be complete soon.
  23. Guest blog on one of my daily favorites—in progress! Excited to share with you soon.
  24. Do three newborn photography sessions—one will be done this weekend, two to go!
  25. Travel with Bodhi by airplane.
  26. Work on making time for my closest female friends (this is vague, but is very important to me)
  27. Ten random acts of kindness—my husband and I have been talking about carrying Target gift cards with us everywhere so we can randomly give them to people. What other ideas do you have?
  28. Send a card a week to someone just to let them know I’m thinking about them.

I will be filling the other four items in soon. What are you hoping to do this year? Do you have a list like this? Please share!

super fancy super hero 1st b-day party

My fabulous friend Lisa of my innerfashionlogue blog, put together an adorable super hero themed first birthday party for her son Miles on Saturday! I had the pleasure of attending and photographing this fun gathering of friends, family and lots of food!

There were many fun details throughout the party and some of the most delicious birthday party food I’ve ever enjoyed! The peanut butter cup cupcakes from Sweet Retreat Cupcake Boutique were to die for! So good! A close-up shot is below to make you drool.

Noteworthy—Sweet Retreat will compete on Cupcake Wars on The Food Network tomorrow night at 7 p.m. They are THAT good!

So many cupcakes, so little time! Lisa offered five different flavors of cupcakes! It was tempting to try one of each, but I stuck to one! Word from all of the party guests was that they were all amazing!

Photos from top left clockwise—A fun coloring wall for the little ones, Lisa and her super hero Miles as guests sang happy birthday!, Miles showing off his fabulous cape, and that lovely dessert table.

Above—Miles enjoying his first birthday cupcake with his dad, and his mama looking on from the distance!

Photos above from left to right—Miles and his grandma (who made a lot of the food from scratch!), the party logo and my little super hero Bodhi!

One more peek at the dessert table before I share all of the vendor info! So excited to plan for Bodhi’s first after this inspiring party!

a big b-day coming soon…

Hello friends! I am working on a list of 30 things to do before I turn 30. Yes, the big 3-0 is right around the corner (well, more like 8 months away but close enough) and I want to make it big…HUGE! I plan to accomplish lots before that day in March and have fun doing it! Have you done a bucket list or a life list? What things have you tried, accomplished or done?

Please share your ideas with me as a comment below or by e-mailing me directly at livethefancylife@gmail.com. I’ll post my 30 before 30 on here (once complete with your help) and will keep you all updated as I get things moving. I’d love to see photos of you accomplishing some of your dreams as part of your bucket list too. Send them my way and I’ll post so you can help inspire others.

My friend Kristin (see below) went skydiving as part of her bucket list for 30! See below if you are looking to be inspired. How awesome is that shot?

I am off to my hometown this weekend for a huge family wedding! This will be our first trip with my little Bodeman, so packing means overpacking to be safe. Live the fancy life!
